Hasbro Legacy Brands are Back!
The Loyal Subjects is dominating the retro toy market-- here's who they're bringing back in 2025!
The Loyal Subjects is bringing back the 1980’s one iconic toy line at a time. Since 2009, The Loyal Subjects has been releasing pop culture toys and collectibles, making licensed figures and toys for popular brands such as Avatar: the Last Airbender, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Naruto, Cowboy Bebop, Masters of the Universe (He-Man), How to Train Your Dragon and Teletubbies, to name a few.
Though I think I walked through their booth briefly when at New York Toy Fair a few years back, they really came onto my radar when they started releasing new Strawberry Shortcake and Rainbow Brite dolls. Unlike many brands that pick up a throwback toy line and modernize it, The Loyal Subjects has generally kept their re-releases close to the original, appealing to both kids of today and those of us who grew up with fond memories of whatever toy brand they’re relaunching.
Back in September of 2024, it was announced that The Loyal Subjects had signed a deal with Hasbro to start producing dolls and toys from some of their legacy lines, including Jem and the Holograms, M.A.S.K, My Buddy, Popples, Rom the Space Knight and My Pet Monster. Not much information is known about these releases, but we have just started seeing products from this venture trickle out to stores, with Jem recently hitting store shelves, along with My Buddy.
Also found on the same display at Walmart as those two items was The Loyal Subjects Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego’s 12 inch fashion doll, which was created in line with the new Netflix series.
Being born in the 80’s, I cannot wait for some of these releases. Let’s start with Jem. For years, I’ve wanted new dolls and now there is hope. Seeing how The Loyal Subjects has treated their other doll lines in the past, I am hopeful that Jem will get treated well. And judging by the empty shelves I’ve encountered while trying to find a Walmart with Jem in stock, I think there are many other excited folks! You can learn more about new Jem doll in a post I wrote recently, found here.
My Buddy getting a brand new release also warms my heart. We’ve had a My Buddy in the house as long as I can remember and I’m glad that kids today can experience fun adventures with this brand new, very huggable stuffed toy.
I may be mistaken, but The Loyal Subjects 14” My Buddy seems a wee bit smaller than the original, which makes me wonder about the next legacy line I am excited to see again—My Pet Monster.
I wanted the original My Pet Monster as a kid so badly, but, sadly, never received one. And that, alongside My Little Pony’s Paradise Estate (which I would LOVE a re-release of), is one of the things I’ve held over my parent’s heads my entire lifetime. I mean, the original My Pet Monster was just the coolest with long teeth, blue fur and yellow eyes— and let’s not forget the chains! What kid growing up in the 80’s wouldn’t want that toy? And, jumping to today, what kid growing up in the 2020’s wouldn’t want a big furry monster like My Pet Monster?
No pictures have made their way online showcasing 2025’s My Pet Monster as of yet, but I am curious if he’ll be as large as he was when originally released, or if he’s going to be shrunk down a bit like My Buddy. As far as I know, there is no release date for My Pet Monster just yet, but I’ll definitely post about it when more information is available.
I’m excited about what is to come from The Loyal Subjects in 2025, which is a welcome change from this past year, where it seemed like nothing very exciting was hitting toy shelves. And I hope the kids of 2025 are just as excited to see Jem, My Pet Monster, My Buddy, M.A.S.K and the rest of the brands while walking the toy aisles and that they spark just as much joy into their lives as it did us 80’s kids decades ago.
