Mirror Mi by MGA
A new doll line is on the way to toy store shelves!
After a good number of dry years with little to no interesting play line doll releases, it seems there may be some interesting things to look for as we head into July from a few big players in the fashion doll game. MGA is a name you definitely know if you’re a fashion doll collector. Creators of the Bratz, Rainbow High, Shadow High, Bratzillaz: House of Witchez and more are set to debut their brand new doll line this July dubbed Mirror Mi.
The first wave of Mirror Mi features six dolls: Suki Goldpetal, Akiko Kittyama, Luna Skye, Blaze Maxx, Amora Valentina and Shai Meadows. With 15 points of articulation, Mirror Mi dolls have a distinctive look with colorful features and bold styles.
Here’s the official backstory:
“Welcome to Mirror Mi, a new fashion doll brand where every character is inspired by feelings that shape us. Beyond ordinary school hallways and classrooms, amplified emotions transform everyday self-expression into a world of music. These elite music academy students discover that every feeling holds a little power if you let it stand in the spotlight. Feelings change and auras shift, but with friends who get you, you can shine in every mood.”
Let’s go through the characters, starting with Suki Goldpetal. According to her character blurb, Suki “has a gift for helping others and mending what has been broken.” Her stark white vinyl with blue detail is reminiscent of a fine porcelain tea set, which is also brought out in her teacup-inspired dress and headphones. Her reflective eyes have tiny petals in them and her hair is a vibrant dark blue, done in a punk rock style. Her China Doll look portrays how fragile friendships can be, but also how once broken, they can be mended.
Akiko Kittyama represents a cozy kindness. By far the standout feature on this doll are her cat paw gloves. Akiko’s pink vest and faux fur skirt are both stylish and cozy and her boots—they’re the definition of kawaii! Her long dark brown hair is styled in curled pigtails with front bangs. Akiko’s vinyl goes from light skinned to white towards her calf, which is an interesting feature that I don’t quite understand. It makes me wonder if her arms/hands have similar coloring. Admittedly, this doll is not one of my favorites of the line based on photos, but she’s stylish and fits the cozy vibe well.
Luna Skye is creative and empathetic. She’s whimsical with a “head in the cloudzzz” energy. Her curly purple hair is vibrant on her sun-kissed tan skin. From promo photos, it already looks incredibly sprayed down, so I foresee folks washing this out and making it a bit more natural. The ruffles and flowy, airy layers of her dress play on the theme of whimsy.
Along Luna’s body are light patterns that look like they’re representing the billowing wind. While again, Luna isn’t my favorite doll in the series, I must say that her eyes, with the touches of pink, green and teal, look great.
If you couldn’t tell by the bright red hair and punk rock outfit, Blaze Maxx is outspoken, brave and bold! Her character design is probably the most ‘on the nose’ of the six dolls. Blaze rocks a striped red and black sweater paired with a faux leather bubble skirt—her fashion is on fire! The same fire can be seen in her red eyes, with a touch of blue to add a bit of depth. Blaze’s hair worries me a bit, because again it looks like those curls are heavily hair sprayed, but the more I look at her outfit, I’m liking her vibe!
Amora Valentina has a big heart and always sees the good in people. Her body is the most gimmicky, as her legs, towards her calf, are transparent and filled with tiny hearts, which reminds me of another long gone MGA line, which I’ll mention later in the post. Amora loves chocolate. You can see it in her chocolate colored sleeves, cake purse and Neapolitan hair. She wears a bright pink, ruffled corset top and a lacy skirt. Her outfit is one of my least favorite, but I like how they incorporated her love of sweets into her hair colors.
And finally, we get to Shai Meadows. She’s my favorite of the six dolls. Fair-skinned with curly white chocolate and pale yellow colored hair, Shai is soft spoken and a little bit shy. Her face is so pretty, with almond shaped blue eyes and gold freckles. She is dainty, with an almost alien like vibe to her. Shai wears a lacy yellow dress lined with soft faux fur. Her legs transition from white to soft yellow, covered under leg warmers. The lamb purse is a nice design touch. It speaks to her shyness and softness, without being overly obvious.
I am excited to see these Mirror Mi dolls in person. My favorite dolls are definitely Shai and Suki. Weirdly, those two dolls remind me of another MGA line, one that was gone too soon, Novi Stars. There’s just something otherworldly about them that draws me in.
Mirror Mi will retail for 29.99 USD and can be purchased wherever dolls are sold.
A quick reminder that I do have a merchandise store set up, as well as a Ko-Fi tip jar for those that would like to support the work we’re doing here on the blog and YouTube channel. You can also subscribe here on Substack and leave a ‘tip’, if you so desire.
